WWAP at the 4th Istanbul International Water Forum

Within the wider context of “Water and Peace”, the 4th IIWF discussed the subjects of urban water management, relief actions, financing mechanisms, legal aspects and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a specific focus on the refugee issue.

In this framework, the WWAP presented the main findings of the United Nations World Water Development Report 2017 ‘Wastewater: The Untapped Resource’.

The event took place on May 11 and the session was composed of two parts. The first part focused on the contents of the report and started with the welcome remarks of the WWAP Coordinator Prof Uhlenbrook, followed by speeches of several high-level speakers, such as from the Turkish Ministry of Forestry and Water Affairs (Undersecretary A. Ozkaldi), from the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR; Global Senior WASH Officer, M. Burt), the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP; B. Lamizana-Diallo), and finally the private sector (Turkish Petroleum Refineries, TUPRAS). The core of the session consisted of the presentation of the WWDR 2017 in Turkish by E. Koncagul (Senior Program Officer, WWAP). The second part of the session consisted of a moderated discussion by panel members from the aforementioned bodies which were asked question on several socioeconomic and environmental issues, such as human well-being, conflict and migration, water reuse in the private sector, research and technical innovation.
