WWAP at RIO+20 United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development
It is time for change. Freshwater resources and their related infrastructure must not be allowed to fall into further degradation and pose exacerbated risks and danger to millions of human lives and the environment.
At Rio+20, we have an opportunity to bring to the forefront of public attention the state and management of our limited freshwater resources and their infrastructure that are being depleted and degraded at an accelerated rate. As highlighted in the 4th edition of the World Water Development Report (WWDR4), ‘Managing Water under Uncertainty and Risk’, coordinated by WWAP and launched this year, there are many serious challenges to overcome.
One of the major tasks the international community is facing today is how best to transfer commitments into concrete actions. It is imperative that freshwater resource management issues are addressed at appropriate local, national, regional and international levels. Decisions leading to actions should emerge from informed consultation and negotiation, taking into account the interconnectedness and relationships between water and various development sectors, and weighing the costs and benefits of all options. We can no longer afford to stand by and watch freshwater resources and their related infrastructure fall into further degradation and pose exacerbated risks and danger to billions of human lives and the environment.
