UN-Water Programmes

In addition to WWAP, UN-Water set up two other programmes in charge of coordinating UN-Water members and partners activities in the fields of water and sanitation and capacity development.

United Nations Office to support the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015

Zaragoza, Spain

The United Nations office to support the International Decade for Action “Water for Life” 2005-2015 was opened in Zaragoza, Spain, on 5 October 2007. The office is managed by the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UN DESA) and facilitates the coordinated implementation of UN-Water’s work on water and sanitation, especially in the areas of communication and advocacy to raise awareness of the challenges and opportunities to solve global water and sanitation issues.

The office contributes to meeting the "Water for Life" Decade’s goals by promoting greater interaction between governments, UN agencies and non-UN partners to deliver a coordinated response; mobilizing resources, partners and other stakeholders; promoting and encouraging partnerships at all levels; and ensuring coherence between the implementation of the water and sanitation agenda and other development goals.

United Nations Water Decade Programme Office on Capacity Development (UNW-DPC)

Bonn, Germany

UNW-DPC is a joint programme of UN Agencies and Programmes cooperating within the framework of UN-Water. It is hosted by the United Nations University and located at the UN Campus in Bonn.

UNW-DPC started work on 1 August 2007. The aim of the programme office is to strengthen the activities of the 24 UN organisations and programmes already cooperating within UN-Water, and to strengthen their activities and support them in their efforts to achieve the millennium goals related to water. This is not just a matter of capacity development related to water, but also of education, training and institutional development. The Vice-Rectorate of the United Nations University in Europe (UNU-ViE) serves as the umbrella organisation for the office.
