Background

In 2015, UN Member States adopted the historic 2030 Agenda, setting universal and transformative goals and targets, and committing to working tirelessly for their full implementation. To ensure that no one is left behind, it is vital to track progress towards the goals. While a number of UN entities plan to produce regular monitoring reports for SDG 6 – to ensure the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030 – there was a need for a report that presents the overview of progress at the High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF) in 2018 when SDG 6 was reviewed in depth.

Therefore, the SDG 6 Synthesis Report 2018 on Water and Sanitation’ was produced by a UN-Water Task Force including 13 UN Agencies, coordinated by WWAP. It provides an overview of the current situation and trends at global and regional levels. It also brings together the latest data available for the eleven SDG 6 global indicators to track progress towards the eight global targets, plus complementary data and evidence from a wide range of different sources. The report presents data on the global baseline status of SDG 6 and, importantly, offers policy recommendations on what more needs to be done to achieve the goal by 2030.
