Regional Launch Brasilia and LAC

The LAC regional launch event of the WWDR2017 was held at the National Water Agency in Brasilia on 22 March. The event was part of the program of celebrations of the World Water Day and Week, which here in Brazil is coordinated by the Ministry of Environment and the National Water Agency (ANA). The event was attended by about 80-90 persons including ambassadors from other LAC countries.

The launch event started with the greetings from the representative of the UNESCO Office in Brazil - Marlova Noleto Jovchelovitch (Program Area Director) and was followed by the video message from the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

The official presentation of the WWDR2017 was done by Miguel Doria and was followed by a debate among invited experts: Fernando Gomes da Silva (Technical Director of Aquapolo Ambiental SA) and Devanir Garcia dos Santos (Executive Manager of the Coordination of Implementation of Inductive Projects of ANA). The debate focused on the reuse of treated wastewater, showcasing successful experiences in Brazil and highlighting national and regional challenges and opportunities. Lidia Brito moderated the debate, doing so she clearly brought to the attention of the technical experts and decision-makers, the huge potential opportunities associated with wastewater treatment and reuse, especially in the industrial and agricultural sectors.

The regional event was closed with the distribution of copies of the WWDR2017 and associated publications in Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Besides the launch event, the UNESCO Brasilia Office also provided for an impressive mass media outreach for the WWDR2017: a great coverage in popular Brazilian newspapers, interviews.
