Regional Launch at ICID CIID

The International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID) in association with its focal point in India - Indian National Committee on Surface Water (INCSW); the Union Ministry of Water Resources, River Development and Ganga Rejuvenation; Govt. of India and Central Water Commission (CWC), Govt. of India organized a one day technical Seminar on Wastewater - Monitoring and Management on the occasion of the World Water Day (22nd March 2017) at CWC Auditorium, New Delhi, India. The event was enriched by the gracious presence of the Hon'ble Union Minister of Water Resources Ms Uma Bharti, Hon'ble Union Minister of State for Water Resources Mr. Vijay Goyal, and Dr. Amarjit Singh, Secretary, MoWR. Copies of the World Water Development Report 2017 were presented to the dignitaries. The event was attended by more than 200 professionals from water resources sector.

Introducing the World Water Development Report 2017 titled ‘Wastewater – The Untapped Resource’, Secretary General of ICID, Er. Avinash C Tyagi highlighted the background for irrigation and drainage professionals to be on the side of the solutions. He pointed out that the 4-R strategy recommended in the WWDR 2017 to be adopted for turning wastewater into a resource: reducing, removing, reusing, and recovering present an opportunity for Irrigation and Drainage managers to play a vital role in first two of the strategies. By reducing the agriculture drainage and reusing the partially treated wastewater in irrigation, the irrigation and drainage management authorities can play a significant role in wastewater management.

The Seminar took an overview of the water quality of major rivers in India, the water quality monitoring programs, wastewater reuse – challenges, mass movements in sanitation and program for rejuvenation of River Yamuna by the experts from National Mission on Climate Change, Central Pollution Control Board, Central Water Commission, Sulabh International, Indian Agriculture Research Institute, IIT Kanpur, Aligarh Muslim University etc.
