Regional Launch Venice

On the occasion of the World Water Day, March 22, VIU answered to the invitation by UNESCO to launch the United Nations World Water Development Report (WWDR) 2017 titled "Wastewater: The Untapped Resource".

The event at the Venice International University involved about 40 VIU and Ca' Foscari International College students and staff, coming from different countries, among which Italy, Germany, Switzerland, USA, Japan, China and Korea.

After an introduction of the SDGs with a specific focus on Water and the Goal n.6 by the Dean of VIU, Carlo Giupponi, Ilda Mannino, scientific coordinator of the TEN Program on Sustainability of VIU, presented the World Water Development Report‎ 2017.

Three stakeholders of the Veneto Region were invited to present their perspective and experience on wastewater treatment and reuse, and to discuss this topic with VIU and Ca' Foscari International College students:

  • Andrea Razzini, CEO of Veritas, the utility managing wastewater in the Veneto province, talked about new challenges for wastewater treatment and reuse, e.g. the presence of substances difficult to treat and even to detect, like drugs and pesticides;
  • Stefano Della Sala, Director of Veritas water analysis lab, talked about the existing methodologies and techniques to analyse wastewater, a key activity for treating and reusing it;
  • Guido Zilli, Sustainability and Quality Manager, Dani Spa, presented the experience of Dani Spa, a leader firm in the tannery sector, that is becoming a leader also in green innovation to reduce water consumption and wastewater production and to increase the wastewater treatment.
