The IOC builds on Rio+20 for a sustainable ocean
On 28 June, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova addressed the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission’s (IOC) Executive Council on the occasion of the closure of its 45th session.
“The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission is a UNESCO flagship,” said the Director-General. “The future of the earth depends on the ocean – as the source of life, as the prime regulator of climate, as a key provider of economic and social services,” she continued, highlighting the core message to be taken away from Rio+20, which recognized the importance of the ocean for the planet in its outcome document.
Each year, the IOC Executive Council reviews issues and items from on-going work plans, and makes preparations for the Assemblies, which meet once per biennium. The 45th session of the UNESCO-IOC Executive Council took place at UNESCO Headquarters from 26 to 28 June.
