Technical Guides and Other Publications

Since the early 1960s, many documents and other publications relating to 'Climate change and sea-level rise' have been published and diffused by UNESCO, though such series as IOC Information Documents Series (launched in 1961, over 1,200 documents to date), IOC Technical Series (1965, some 70 to date), Technical Papers in Marine Science (67 papers from 1965-1994), etc.

Many of the more recent publications can be accessed through the web-sites of the sponsoring units and programmes, which also provide information on out-of-series publications. Some examples follow.

• El Niño: Fact and Fiction, by Bruno Voituriez and Guy Jacques (2000, 140 pp). Third volume in the IOC Ocean Forum Series, designed to make scientific knowledge on and understanding of the ocean-climate interface more accessible to the general public.
• GOOS Review (2003, 77 pp).Report of the review panel on the structure, mandates and modus operandi of the Global Oceanic Observing System.
• Implementation of Global Observations for GOOS/GCOS – An Action Plan. GOOS Report No. 66. Provides advice on implementing GOOS for climate and weather forecasting purposes and global scale ocean services.
• Integrated Strategic Design Plan for the Coastal Ocean Observations Module of the Global Ocean Observing System (2003, 197 pp.).GOOS Report No. 125. Provides best available advice on how to start implementing GOOS in coastal seas and Exclusive Economic Zones.
• Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission Annual Report 2001. (2002, 148 pp). Includes progress reports on IOC work on climate-related issues, as well as IOC regional groupings (Western Pacific, Caribbean, Indian Ocean, Central Eastern Atlantic).
• Marine Ecosystems and Global Change. No. 5 in the IGBP (International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme) Science Series, designed to make IGBP's research output accessible to a wide range of audiences, in particular to the policy and resource management communities.
• Technical Tools for Regional Seas Management: The Role of the Global Ocean Observing System (GOOS), by Colin Summerhayes (2002, 20 pp). Article in the journal Ocean & Coastal Management (Volume 45, Issues 11-12, 777-796, 2002) by the then head of the IOC-GOOS Project Office. GOOS as operational oceanography at the global scale. Strengthening the links between GOOS and UNEP's Regional Seas programmes.
