Shared Aquifers in Santo Domingo
The main outputs of the project are the development of an international inventory of shared aquifers and of a management toolkit for transboundary aquifers.
Work is underway on three aquifers that are shared by the Dominican Republic and Haiti on the Caribbean island of Santo Domingo (Hispaniola): Artibonito aquifer, Pedernales aquifer and Masacre aquifer.
The project is being carried out as part of ISARM (International Shared Aquifer Resource Management), an initiative of UNESCO’s International Hydrological Programme (IHP), in collaboration with the Organization of American States (OAS) and the International Association for Hydrogeologists (IAH).
The overall aim of ISARM is to develop a complete knowledge of transboundary aquifers, on a scientific, legal, institutional, socio-economic and environmental level.
