19th Consultation Meeting of the Pacific Heads of Education Systems

The 19th Consultation meeting of the Pacific Heads of Education Systems (PHES) was held in Nadi, Fiji, on 16 March 2012. The 2009 Forum Education Ministers’ Meeting (FEdMM) in Tonga agreed that the PHES should continue to meet and discuss the agenda for the FEdMM. Countries represented at the meeting were Cook Islands, Kiribati, Nauru, Palau, Papua New Guinea, RMI, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tokelau, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu together with Australia and New Zealand.

The development partners present at the meeting include the Council of Pacific Education (COPE), Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS), Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC) / Secretariat of the Pacific Board for Educational Assessment (SPBEA), UNESCO, UNICEF and the University of the South Pacific (USP).

During the meeting the PHES heard presentations from the development partners with updates on regional activities that are being developed and implemented in the region as mandated by the Forum Education Ministers. They included updates on the Pacific Education Development Framework (PEDF), technical and vocational education and training (TVET), teachers and principals, Pacific benchmarking education quality for results, climate change education, and early childhood care and education (ECCE).

As the Interim Secretariat for the PHES, UNESCO not only facilitated the consultation meeting but also made a financial contribution to the organization of the meeting, together with the PIFS. UNESCO presented updates on the Pacific professional standards for school principals, climate change education and education for sustainable development (ESD).

The outcome of the meeting will facilitate the preparation and organization of the next FEdMM which is schedule for 14-15 May 2012 in Port Vila, Vanuatu.
