International Science Programmes

Each of UNESCO’s international science programmes itself instantiate and promote science diplomacy in its specific thematic area.

In addition to these programmes, a body with functional autonomy within UNESCO carries out a specific mandate on ocean sciences:

  • Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC); focuses on promoting international cooperation and coordinates programmes in research, services and capacity-building in the field of ocean science. IOC undertakes many initiatives and activities related to ocean science with the objective to promote peace and sustainable development. Through the Ocean and Climate 2015 Platform, for example, IOC played an important role in encouraging the international community to include the ocean in the Paris Climate Agreement as part of the solution in combating climate change.
