Albanian STI Strategy published
16 March - Seven months after the Albanian STI Strategy was approved by the Albanian Parliament in August, a bilingual volume has just been published with the support of UNESCO’s Regional Bureau for Science and Culture in Europe, within the framework of the One UN Programme. Albania is one of the eight pilot countries for this programme. The Strategy has been drawn up with technical expertise and advice from UNESCO, on the basis of an extensive national consultation involving a large panel of representatives of the scientific community and relevant ministries. It constitutes the first step towards building a ‘knowledge-based’ economy and society in Albania. It describes the country’s medium-term vision for 2009-2015 with regard to science and research, while focusing on ‘the achievement of excellence in a small number of priority areas by 2015, through the concentration of national and international resources and in close co-operation with Europe, as well as through the provision of systematic support for innovation and technology transfer to cater for the needs of the productive sector’.
