Pr Vivian Wing-Wah Yam, Laureate 2011, L'Oréal-UNESCO Awards For Women in Science

The Division for Science Policy and Sustainable Development is preparing a new initiative: the Science, Technology and Innovation Global Assessment Programme (STIGAP). STIGAP’s objective will be to monitor, analyze and identify existing indicators and reporting systems to illustrate the development of STI in the form of a global assessment. The programme will also promote the development of new STI indicators in order to better respond to the specific needs of Member States within their different social, economic and cultural contexts with an overall aim to providing country appropriate policy advice on the formulation and implementation of STI policies, strategies and plans that contribute to building peace, inclusive societies and sustainable development.

Within the framework of the preparation of the programme, UNESCO will bring together a group of distinguished international experts within the domain of STI policy and in a Roundtable Meeting. The Meeting is expected to create partnership opportunities for the implementation of STIGAP by producing a solid technical basis for its design as well as to mobilize key actors and donors for its implementation.

The Roundtable Meeting is the first of several meetings to be organized in the preparation of STIGAP and is expected to commence UNESCO’s engagement in a collective effort to monitor the development of STI through various networks including its regional offices and relevant national institutions.

The Roundtable Meeting will take place at UNESCO, Paris from 4 and 5 July 2011, Room XVI.
