UNESCO to assist Azerbaijan in designing ‘road map’ for a national STI strategy
23 November – The President of the Azerbaijan Academy of Sciences, Mahmud Karimov, and the Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences, Gretchen Kalonji, are due to sign an agreement on 24 November establishing a project through which UNESCO will assist the Government of Azerbaijan and the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences in designing a ‘road map’ for the formulation of the Azerbaijan Science, Technology and Innovation Strategy. The strategy will focus on issues such as institutional capacity-building in science, technology and innovation (STI), decision-making mechanisms, STI priority-setting, including priorities for R&D and for high-level training, STI funding instruments, including the Science Development Foundation being launched by the government, higher education, including including links with industry, R&D evaluation mechanisms and sustained STI statistics and indicators.
The 11-month project is the outcome of a request addressed to UNESCO by the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan, H.E. Ilham Aliyev. The project is financially supported by Japanese Funds-in-Trust in the amount of US$100,000 and will be implemented by the Division for Science Policy and Sustainable Development, headed by Lidia Brito. The signing ceremony will take place at UNESCO headquarters in Paris at 12:30 pm (Room XV).
