Biodiversity in UNESCO

In order to address, in a holistic and integrated manner, all aspects related to the conservation and sustainable and equitable use of biodiversity from the perspective of UNESCO’S mandate and its relevant programmes and activities, in October 2010, the UNESCO Executive Board noted that a coherent organization-wide initiative on Biodiversity –the UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative– shall be developed.

The UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative is an interdisciplinary initiative that cuts across the Organization’s programme sectors. To facilitate the Initiative's design and implementation, an informal UNESCO Biodiversity Initiative group brings together expertise from the Natural Sciences, Social and Human Sciences, Culture, Communication & Information and Education. It also involves UNESCO field offices.
