This International Platform for Reducing Earthquake Disasters (IPRED) workshop will specifically examine the outcomes of recent major earthquakes: Indonesia in 2009, Chile and Haiti in 2010, and Japan and New Zealand in 2011. Topics of particular interest will also be discussed, including safety-related issues for communities, public structure and housing safety (building codes); consequently new technologies and techniques will be presented.

UNESCO launched the IPRED programme in July 2008 to identify gaps and priorities through sharing scientific knowledge and experience in seismology and earthquake engineering, and to support policies and public awareness which improve preparation against earthquakes.
