Research Programme on the Social, Human, Ethical and Gender Dimensions of Climate Change

The notions of “vulnerability” and “resilience” cannot be adequately understood without reference to the full range of social and human processes that drive the interaction between climate and society.

UNESCO’s policy relevant, action oriented Research Programme on the Social, Human, Ethical and Gender Dimensions of Climate Change will focus in particular on the design and implementation of appropriate climate change adaptation actions, based on the MOST and environmental ethics programmes, benefiting the most vulnerable related to the cross-cutting issues of energy, water and biosphere management, as well as improve understanding of gender equality issues related to climate change.
The Initiative will maximize the synergies among its main components and will be carried-out from the global down to the regional, national and local levels.

Main objectives:

  • Establishment of a truly comprehensive social and human sciences-wide approach to climate change based on two pillars: the MOST Programme, and the environmental ethics programme.
  • Strengthened intersectoral cooperation on fresh water, energy, REDD and biodiversity management.
  • Improved understanding of gender equality issues entailed in addressing the social and human dimension of climate change and better capacity to respond to them.
