International Conference on Living Heritage in Udaipur

Culture Sector of UNESCO New Delhi was represented by Ms Moe Chiba at the International Conference on Living Heritage organized on 27th November 2012, by Maharana of Mewar Charitable Foundation (MMCF) in Udaipur (Rajasthan). MMCF is a trust constituted by the Royal family of Mewar, owner of Udaipur City Palace, as a way to support arts and culture of the Marwari region. The Foundation has supported the maintenance and restoration of the Udaipur City Palace as well as the revival of various crafts, performing arts and festivals of the region for long.

This one-day conference was attended by a number of experts on living heritage, both from India and abroad. Mrs. Marilyn Truscott (Australia), President of International Committee of Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICICH) of ICOMOS was present at the Seminar. Ms Chiba delivered a presentation on “Living Heritage for Local Development” to share views on the interface between culture and development. On the occasion of this event, initial discussions were held with MMCF on the possibility of UNESCO collaboration for the promotion of living heritage in the city of Udaipur. This collaboration would consist in rendering technical and intellectual support to assist the Foundation in mainstreaming “Living Heritage” as part of the development agenda of the City of Udaipur and Mewar Region. A visit to the Udaipur city-palace was also organized.
