Observing the International Day for Persons with Disabilities 2018 in New Delhi

On 3 December 2018, UNESCO New Delhi and its partners observed the International Day for Persons with Disabilities. The theme of the event was ‘Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality’.

The event was opened by Mr Al-Amin Yusuph, Advisor (Communication and Information) at UNESCO New Delhi, and included a guest address by Ms Nishtha Dudeja, the winner of the Miss Deaf India 2018 and Miss Deaf Asia 2018 awards.

After the inaugural session came a stunning Indian dance performance by performers with disabilities from the Samarthanam Trust for the Disabled. The dance was followed by the screening of True Colours, a short film about the international arts festival for performers with disabilities organized by UNESCO and the Nippon Foundation in Singapore in March 2018. Selected films from the We Care Film Festival – a unique international film festival that focuses specifically on building awareness about disability-related issues and advocating the rights of persons with disabilities – were screened as well.

Ms Meera Shenoy, the Founder of Youth4Jobs (an organization that trains and skills young persons with disabilities and helps them find jobs) made a presentation on the occasion about a new initiative she has launched called Not Just Art. Not Just Art identifies artists with disabilities and helps them build market linkages for their work.

The event concluded with a panel discussion on the theme ‘Empowering Persons with Disabilities and Ensuring Inclusiveness and Equality’, moderated by Mr George Abraham, the CEO of the Score Foundation.
