ICTs and Knowledge Societies
UNESCO promotes the building of inclusive knowledge societies through international dialogue, establishing frameworks for collaborative action, creating awareness of the potential of ICT for development, and maintaining the focus of the debate on content issues. UNESCO will enhance its Global Open Access Portal and Open Educational Resources (OER) Platform and Member States will be assisted in efforts to develop enabling policies and cooperation mechanisms.
Assistance will be provided to public authorities and institutes on the adoption of Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) and Open Web Standards, notably though UNESCO’s FOSS portal. UNESCO will assist Member States in the development of gender-sensitive and gender-inclusive policies that would enable women (including girls) and men to enjoy the benefits of ICTs and FOSS to improve their lives by providing learning opportunities, health care delivery, environmental protection, increased incomes and productivity, as well as increased participation in governance.
