UNESCO Furthers Cooperation with Global Risk Forum Davos
The Director-General Irina Bokova affirmed UNESCO’s ambition to strengthen its role in the field of disaster risk prevention by signing a letter of intent with Dr Walter Amman, President of the Global Risk Forum Davos, on 20 January 2011.
“The Global Risk Forum is a very good platform for expanding UNESCO’s responsibilities in this area and for reaching out to more partners working on risk preparedness, in the aim of assisting developing countries and the most vulnerable populations,” she said.
The Forum serves as a centre of knowledge-exchange for the application of risk management strategies, tools and practical solutions involving all types of risks and disasters. Its multidisciplinary approach encompassing the natural and human sciences, culture and education is closely attuned to UNESCO’s mandate. The two entities have enjoyed steady cooperation over the past years, with the letter of intent providing a framework to further facilitate learning, knowledge sharing and capacity building in disaster and risk management.
