Welcome Reception for World Press Freedom Day
In 2 May, at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Costa Rica, Laura Chinchilla, and with the participation of several Cabinet Ministers and representatives of the diplomatic corps, a welcome reception was held to celebrate World Press Freedom Day, that will be celebrated on 3 May 2013, in Costa Rica.
At the event, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova expressed her appreciation to the government of Costa Rica for the opportunity to celebrate this International Day in a country with a strong tradition of freedom and democracy.
Irina Bokova highlighted the importance of the fight against impunity and the fact that without freedom of expression there can be no sustainable democratic process.
The President of Costa Rica recognized the valuable contribution of UNESCO through its commitment and programmes to advance tolerance and freedom, especially freedom of expression, as part of the daily life of the Costa Rican people.
Celebrations of World Press Freedom Day will be held 3 May, including the award ceremony of UNESCO Guillermo Cano World Press Freedom Prize.
