Education and Risk Management

The growing losses caused by natural extreme events, such as earthquakes, floods, landslides, volcanic eruptions, windstorms, draughts and desertification represent an important challenge to UNESCO Member States, especially in developing countries. Latin America and the Caribbean’s region is diverse and no strange to these natural phenomena.

Within the region, there is a tendency to concentrate efforts into post-disaster action. UNESCO is committed to lead a conceptual change towards a disaster preventive action. Adding a Risk Management focus to the education sector is crucial for raising awareness on causes and effects of natural disasters, and also contribute to creating a preventive culture.

Incorporating the risk management approach on the educational sector is decisive for the increase of awareness on disasters caused by extreme natural phenomena. Schools that include risk management actions contribute to a preventive culture essential for countries’ sustainable development.
