MAB Programme

UNESCO´s Man and the Biosphere Programme (MAB) is an intergovernmental programme that aims to establish a scientific basis for the improvement of relationships between people and their environments.

The MAB combines exact, natural and social sciences as well as education, to improve human livelihoods, contribute to the equitable sharing of benefits and safeguard natural and managed ecosystems. This promotes innovative approaches to economic development that are socially and culturally appropriate and environmentally sustainable.

Through the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Programme, the MAB programme promotes the World Network of Biosphere Reserves (WNBR), a global network of sites to learn about sustainable development. In Latin America and the Caribbean, this network is supported by the Network of National Committees and Biosphere Reserves of Ibero-America and the Caribbean (IBEROMAB).
