Latin America and the Caribbean is facing changes with regard to professions and competences in Earth sciences. The increasing number of conflicts linked to the care of the environment, the distribution and exploitation of natural resources, and the redistribution of wealth deriving from them requires professionals that are able to address issues related to science communication as well as to heed social needs and concerns.

There will be greater demand for professionals who specialize in energy issues and environmental geology, i.e. to optimize the relationship existing between human habitat and geological factors which are present in different environments. However, data related to Earth Science education is scarce, making it difficult to assess what are the educational trends and the conditions for its teaching and learning.




The project "Building a community vision for Geosciences education in Latin America and the Caribbean" aims to support the development of Geoscience to help countries benefit from and contribute to sustainable development, considering priorities such as minerals, energy, and water resources and geological risk.

Within this framework, the specific objective is to make a first diagnosis of regional capacities, needs and opportunities in Earth Science education that could help develop a community vision for geoscience education and to plot the way ahead for national policies and international cooperation in the field.

The activity contributes to Sustainable Development Goals 5 (target 5a); 8 (targets 8.3 and 8.9) and 17 (targets 17.6 and 17.9).


Main activities

  • Survey on Geosciences Education (years 2016-2017), generating updated and compared information on the inclusion of Earth Sciences in the curriculum of compulsory education.
  • Intersectoral dialogue (year 2017), gathering the educational community and the public and private sectors to advance a conversation regarding future directions, strategies and programs in Earth Science education

Geographic coverage

While the initiative focuses on the Latin American and Caribbean region, it foresees the inclusion of other regions through a South-South cooperation scheme with our partners.

In this sense, the project will be carried-out in other countries, both through the implementation of the survey as by means of the participation of international experts in the analysis and discussion of the results.
