Working areas

On the subject of disaster risk reduction, UNESCO supports its Member States in the following areas:

 

  • Capacity-building exercises to reinforce human capital in anticipating and optimally reacting to threats
  • Tool development like risk reduction strategies and standard operating procedures
  • Providing better guidance and coordination on the fields relating to science in order to enhance efforts on disaster prevention and mitigation by incorporating the lessons learned from post-disaster studies into disaster mitigation efforts.
  • Promoting international cooperation and regional networks strengthening for knowledge exchange and management and capacity-building for disaster preparation and mitigation
  • Evaluating the risk of natural disasters through the development of early warning systems and risk mapping exercises
  • Emphasizing the gender component to contribute to the construction of a resilience culture
  • Development of coping mechanisms for potential disasters through education, sciences and promoting social resilience
