Science, technology and innovation for sustainable development

Science, technology and innovation (STI) are key elements in developing/the development of sustainable knowledge societies. Therefore, STI national capacities are essential for economic development and social progress. STI regional, national and subnational policies guide and promote investments and training human resources by creating and strengthening the capacities required for STI to serve sustainable development.

As Regional Office for Science in Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC), UNESCO Montevideo, based on provided consultations, acts for the 2012-2017 period in the following strategic action areas:


  • Regional Cooperation on STI policies
  • SPIN: Information platform on science policy in Latin America and the Caribbean
  • Capacities in Science and Engineering, Education and Popularization of STI
  • Local and Traditional Knowledge, and STI policies
