21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers
3 May was World Press Freedom Day. The day declared by the UN General Assembly in 1993 is celebrated every year across the world to raise awareness of the importance of freedom of press and the need to protect the fundamental principle of freedom of expression as enshrined in Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
In Cambodia, more than 200 journalists, media associations, non-governmental organizations, diplomatic missions, students and United Nations organizations in Phnom Penh came together to celebrate World Press Freedom Day in a half-day conference on 3rd May 2011.
Adopting the universal theme, “21st Century Media: New Frontiers, New Barriers”, the conference was held from 8 a.m. to 12 noon at the Korean Cultural Center with speakers from the government, international organizations and media profession. The aim of the event was to present the challenges, opportunities and current trend in a new media landscape in Cambodia while aiming at expanding space for press freedom, freedom of expression and independent media.
The event was organized by UNESCO and UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Cambodia (UNOHCHR) in collaboration with the Cambodia Communication Institute (CCI), Cambodian Club of Journalists (CCJ), Cambodia Association for the Protection of Journalists (CAPJ), and Cambodia Center for Independent Media (CCIM).
