Nomination Programme

@Sar Sokhny - Hol Weaving, 2006

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts in close collaboration with UNESCO Phnom Penh Office has set up the Intangible Cultural Heritage Nomination Program since 2003. The Directorate-General of Intangible Cultural Heritage has been working on the following activities:

a. Inscription

  • 7 November 2003 : Inscription of the Cambodian Royal Ballet
  • 25 November 2005: Inscription of Sbek Thom

b. Candidatures submission

  • March 2010 : Submission of Chapei, officially called “Long-necked lute and epic singing in Cambodia” candidature
  • March 2011 : Submission of Khmer weaving candidature

These two candidatures are already complete and under evaluation. The nomination will be proclaimed in November 2011 in Bali (Indonesia) during the 6th intergovernmental committee for the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

c. Candidature preparation

The Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts is now working in close collaboration with UNESCO Phnom Penh Office on the preparation of the Khmer traditional martial art candidature, which is planned to be submitted to the 2003 Convention secretariat before March 2012.
