Instituto-e presents II GESCOM Praias

OSCIP, founded and headed by Oskar Metsavaht, promotes the International Scientific Seminar of Co-Management of Beaches during Rio +20

In partnership with UNESCO and Rio de Janeiro City Hall, Instituto-e will be responsible for promoting the second edition of the International Scientific Seminar of Co-Management of Beaches (II Gescom Beaches), to be held in Rio de Janeiro, at the Copacabana Fort , between 11-12 June, as part of the official  Rio+20 calendar and within the schedule of the project Humanidade 2012 (Humanity 2012).

II Gescom Beaches will serve as a platform for a discussion among government officials, business and civil society representatives on the valuation of public-private partnership in the management of beaches, aiming to score their rights and responsibilities.

Throughout the two days event, the improvement of the management of the Brazilian coast through coastal management plans and initiatives that promote conservation and responsible development of natural heritage will be discussed.

Panelists include Mayor Eduardo Paes, Carlos Alberto Muniz (Secretary for the Environment - RJ),  Oskar Metsavaht e Nina Braga (Instituto-e), Celso Schenkel (UNESCO in Brazil), Prof. Alexander Turra (USP), Guilherme Dutra (Conservation International), Joseph Archer (Blue Flag Programme - Europe), Leana Bernardi (Blue Flag Programme - Brazil), John Eustace (National Association of Municipal Environmental Bodies-ANAMMA), Margaret Carvalho (Sebrae-RJ), Prof. Marinez Scherer (UFSC) and other recognized researchers and environmental managers.

In the end of II Gescom Beaches, the nomination of Prainha, located in the western area of the city, to receive the Blue Flag certificate of socio-environmental excellence will be launched – the programme takes part in 46 countries and 3,012 beaches in the world. For its nomination, the beach in Rio is getting structural improvements such as restoration of wooden decks for access to the beach and the areas of Restinga vegetation, among others.

After a year of work, Prainha shall be the second Brazilian beach to receive the 'Blue Flag' certificate. The action is an initiative from the Rio de Janeiro City Hall and the Instituto-e, with the support of the Association of Surfers and Friends of Prainha (ASAP).

Instituto-e helps to disseminate a culture of collective and individual responsibility, transforming concepts into attitudes, speech into action. Instituto-E wishes to become a meeting channel where people, ideas and organizations from Brazil and abroad may share their knowledge towards struggling against the lack of information and also to promote a culture of social environment conscious.

United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) was created on 16 November, 1945, soon after the Second World War, in order to ensure peace through intellectual cooperation among nations, following up on world development and helping Member States – 193 nations today – in the search for solutions to the problems that challenge our societies.
