Paraty and Ilha Grande become the first Mixed World Heritage site in Brazil

Region was recognized as natural and cultural heritage at the same time. It comprises the Serra da Bocaina National Park, the Ilha Grande State Park, the Praia do Sul Biological Reserve, the Cairuçu Environmental Preservation Area and the Historic Center of Paraty and Morro da Vila Velha.

The UNESCO’s World Heritage Committee has decided to inscribe the site Paraty: Culture and Biodiversity in the World Heritage List, today 05 July, 2019, during its 43rd session, that takes place in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan, from 30 June to 10 July, 2019. The place becomes the 22nd  Brazilian site to receive the international recognition of World Heritage, since the country already has seven natural sites and 14 cultural sites. The area involves territorial portions of eight municipalities from the states of São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro, the most part in the cities of Paraty and Ilha Grande.
