“Water cooperation is about human dignity..." stated the Director-General
On 14 November 2013, the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova, opened an event for the Special Programme on the International Year of Water Cooperation, organized in the framework the 37th Session of the General Conference, currently taking place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris.
“Water cooperation is about human dignity as much as it is about development, the two cannot be separated” stated the Director-General.
Attending the event were the President of the International Center for Education, Capacity-Building and Applied Research in Water Foundation (HidroEX), Octávio Elísio Alves de Brito, the IHP Vice-Chairperson for Africa, Chrispine Omondi Juma, the Ambassador of Tajikistan to the United Nations, H. E. Mr Sirodjidin M. Aslov, as well as the Permanent Delegates to UNESCO of the Netherlands, Germany, Hungary, the Republic of Korea and Mexico.
The panellists discussed a range of topics that are of major importance for the future of water cooperation, including -- water cooperation against scarcity, water security in Africa, and sustainable water sharing and management. The event is part of a series of events organized in the context of the International Year of Water Cooperation that UNESCO is leading on behalf of UN-WATER.
