Launched by UNESCO in 2004, the Creative Cities Network seeks to support and unleash the creative, social and economic potential of local communities, with the goal of promoting cultural diversity.

The Network aims to connect cities that support creative economies to enable them to share knowledge, experience, leadership abilities and technology. Cities interested in being part of the Network are the ones that seek to become centres of creative excellence that will help other cities, particularly those in developing countries, to cultivate their own creative economies, especially based on creative tourism.

UNESCO believes the importance of focusing on cities, where creative industries contribute to the social structure, cultural diversity and improved daily life, while strengthening communities and helping to define a common identity.
