Friday, 21 June, the Liceo Tecnico A 100 of San Miguel and its entire student community organised the event, “Our Common Future” to renew their dedication to caring for the environment in commemoration of the International Environment Day (5 June) and the International Day to Combat Desertification (17 June).

In this activity, student representatives presented the results of their pro-environment actions and participated in activities organised by UNESCO  and the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD). Also present was the National Forest Corporation of Chile (CONAF) with its tree-planting programme “One Chilean, One Tree”.

The event also served to celebrate the school’s accomplishments based on its commitment to the environment adopted in 2012 at the same international commemoration event. In 2013, the students renewed their commitment and promised to promote more sustainable lifestyles that are in harmony with the environment through the careers they are studying (childcare, clothing and textile production, collective food services). Some examples are  environmental education lessons for young children and clothing made from organic products.

The more than 800 adolescents watched the documentary, HOME, directed by Yann Arthus-Bertrand, in which they could see how our civilisation is affecting the planet and destroying its fragile equilibrium. The event ended with an activity directed by UNCCD and UNESCO that invited all students to reflect on the movie and people’s role in defining the future of our planet.
