The current issue of the International Journal on Multicultural Societies, published by UNESCO, takes up the debate of the inaugural issue of the Journal on democratic governance in multi-religious societies. Whereas the contributions to the inaugural issue were devoted to the general dynamics of religious diversity at both global and nation-state level, this issue focuses on more specific trends in the public management of religious diversity. Its contributions are based on scientific discussions held during a thematic session – Gestion publique du pluralisme religieux: évolution des problématiques et débats sociologiques – at the biennial conference of the International Society for the Sociology of Religion held in Leuven, Belgium, 26–30 July 1999. This session was organised by Françoise Champion, guest editor of the current issue.
