Co-organized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and UNESCO, the 8th World Conference on Sport, Education and Culture will be held in Amsterdam (Netherlands), from 25 to 27 November 2012. The event, to be opened by the President of the IOC and a high-level UNESCO representative, will bring together around 500 people from governments, UN agencies and NGOs to highlight the power of sport as a mediator for social and economic development.

Key discussion topics include the value of sport to civil society, education and culture, most notably with respect to reinforcing family structures and building community. With this in mind, the Conference will be held under the banner of the UN International Year of Cooperatives, which aims to raise public awareness of the invaluable contributions of cooperative enterprises to poverty reduction, employment generation and social inclusion.

Building on the success of the 2010 edition of the Conference, the engagement of young people will be a key outcome. The Conference itself will culminate in a Youth Session which aims to showcase the experience, motivation and success of 9 nine young leaders from around the world who have used sport to support community development, peace building, informal education and social inclusion. The session format will be aligned with the Conference’s three pillars of transition: policy, practice and potential, from a youth perspective.

Finally, and taking advantage of the large number of experts present, there will be a side meeting of the first MINEPS V working group on the subject of access to sport for all. Discussions will initiate the preparation of content for the event itself which will be held from 28 to 30 May 2013.
