Fourteenth Session (Nairobi, 2007)

At the kind invitation of the Government of Kenya, the fourteenth (ordinary) session of the International Bioethics Committee (IBC) was held in Nairobi from 17 to 19 May 2007 and gathered together more than 150 participants from 53 countries, with an active participation of numerous government representatives and experts from various African countries.

In accordance with the agenda, two of the principles set forth in the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights (2005) - consent and social responsibility and health – were discussed during this fourteenth session.  On this occasion, IBC had the opportunity to accomplish its work on consent and to pursue and refine its work on social responsibility and health.  Taking place for the first time in Sub-Saharan Africa, the fourteenth session was also the occasion to devote an entire day to the African perspectives of bioethics.

Finally, IBC elected its new Bureau and held a preliminary reflection on its future work programme for 2008-2009.
