10th Extraordinary Session of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST)

The public meetings of the 25th (Ordinary) Session of the (IBC); the Joint Session of the IBC and the IGBC; the Extraordinary Session of the IGBC; and the public meetings of the 10th Extraordinary Session of COMEST will be held in Room XI at UNESCO Headquarters (Paris) on 11 and 12 (morning) September 2018.

Furthermore, a short session of the IGBC will be convened to elect a Vice-Chairperson from the Eastern European States electoral group (Group II) on 11 September 2018 from 2:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m.

These sessions will examine the main work topics of COMEST for 2018-2019 on water ethics and on the ethical implications of the Internet of Things, as well as the work topics of the IBC for 2018-2019 on the principle of individual responsibility as related to health and modern parenthood.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the IBC and the 20th anniversary of the IGBC and COMEST. To celebrate these milestones, during the IBC and COMEST sessions, two roundtables on “Artificial Intelligence: Reflection on its complexity and impact on our society” and on “Genome editing: why ethics matter” will be held.

The working languages for the sessions will be English and French. All relevant documents for the sessions will be prepared in these two languages and will be made available on this website prior to the meetings.

In accordance with the Rules and Procedures of the IGBC, simultaneous interpretation in Arabic, English, French, Russian and Spanish will be provided for the meetings on 11 September 2018. Furthermore, in accordance with the Rules and Procedures of COMEST, simultaneous interpretation in English and French will be provided for the meetings on the morning of 12 September 2018. Simultaneous interpretation will be provided in English and French only for the roundtables on 11 and 12 September.

Meetings reserved for the IBC and COMEST members only will be organized on 10, 12 (after the closing of the public session), 13, and 14 September 2018.
