Work Programme of the IBC for 2018-2019

Based on the discussions during the 24th (Ordinary) Session of the International Bioethics Committee (Paris, September 2017), and based on the conclusions of the 10th (Ordinary) Session of the Intergovernmental Bioethics Committee (Paris, June 2017), the Bureau of the IBC finalized in September 2017 the work programme of the Committee for 2018-2019 as follows:

  • The Committee will elaborate on the principle of individual responsibility for health as part of its reflection on Article 5 (Autonomy and Individual Responsibility) of the Universal Declaration on Bioethics and Human Rights. This will also provide an opportunity to further reflect on some of the issues raised on its work concerning big data and health.
  • The IBC also decided to address the topic of modern parenthood, reflecting on the interactions between societal and technological developments that are leading to new concepts and forms of parenthood, including the impact on cross-border practices and reproductive justice.

The Committee will remain open to addressing other emerging bioethical challenges during the 2018-2019 biennium.
