Yemen - Al Rahma Foundation

UNESCO supports the Al Rahma Foundation to protect orphaned girls from exploitation and provide them with a modern education.

In Yemen, in the south of the Arabian Peninsula, orphaned girls are often hidden away and exploited by their extended families as domestic help. Only seldom can they go to school. UNESCO has supported the Al Rahma Foundation to try and put an end to this harsh tradition. It gives parentless girls a modern education, providing food and healthcare, and seeks to form small substitute families similar to the model developed by the SOS Children’s Villages of Morocco. For all these purposes, the training of personnel in psychology, hygiene and first aid, as well as management, is indispensable.
