UNESCO Charity Gala to Support Children in Need

The nineteenth charity gala in support of UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need will be held in Düsseldorf (Germany) on 30 October 2010 under the auspices of UNESCO Director General, Irina Bokova. Following an invitation of UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador for Children in Need, Ute-Henriette von Ohoven, many international stars are expected to attend this major event.

Launched in 1992 at the initiative of Ute-Henriette Ohoven, and organised by the Foundation for UNESCO - Education of Children in Need, the charity gala has become an international fundraising event for UNESCO’s Programme for the Education of Children in Need. Numerous personalities from the German business community, the media, and the international sport and art scene, will participate. Indeed, famous personalities such as Sienna Miller, Armin Mueller-Stahl, Ornella Muti, Meg Ryan, Oliver Stone, and Donatella Versace, will make the trip to support UNESCO’s work in this area.

This is also the occasion to award the “Children in Need” Prize to personalities for their outstanding social commitment. This year, the laureates of the Award are the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the German Otto Group, Michael Otto, and former UNESCO Director-General, Federico Mayor Zaragoza.

UNESCO created the Programme for the Education of Children in Need in 1992 to offer a future to vulnerable and marginalised children through education. Entirely financed by private donations, it mainly supports field projects. Since its creation, over US$34 million has been raised in private funds and these have been fully and directly invested into immediate support for over 340 projects in over 90 countries worldwide.
