Third Ordinary Session of COMEST, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 1-4 December 2003
At the kind invitation of the Brazilian Government, the Third Session of the World Commission on the Ethics of Scientific Knowledge and Technology (COMEST) was held in Rio de Janeiro from 1 to 4 December 2003. More than 550 registered participants and 40 distinguished guests attended the meeting.
The Session – the first statutory session held outside Europe – was characterized by a number of scientific debates and political events, and gave the opportunity to examine the work carried out by COMEST during the pas two years. It also focused for the first time on new themes such as ethics of nanotechnology, ethics education, an oath and a code of conduct for scientists, the ethical implication of research with human beings in developing countries, and the relationships between the development of science and technology and sustainability.
