This event, placed under the patronage of the Prime Minister of the Republic of Haiti and the auspices of UNESCO, is organized in line with the commemoration of the 60th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

Over 200 years after, “the global objective of this symposium is to reflect on the Haitian Revolution, both cause and integral part of the transformations experienced in the Atlantic world in a broad sense” underlined Pierre Sané, UNESCO Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences who will open the debates with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Haiti, Michèle Pierre-Louis, and the Chairman of UNESCO’s Executive Board, Olabiyi Babalola Joseph Yai.

During three days, researchers, scholars and representatives of national institutions of various countries will discuss, through thematic round tables, issues such as the universality of Human Rights in the light of the Haitian Revolution, its contribution as well as its legacy or the Haitian society in its relations with others.

Finally, on August 23, International Day for the Remembrance of the Slave Trade and of its Abolition, a tribute will be paid to three Haitians key-figures, Georges Corvington, Leslie Manigat et Michel-Rolph Trouillot and UNESCO will present its project on The Slave Route.
