Dissemination of Knowledge on Human Rights
UNESCO has a longstanding experience in the field of the promotion of knowledge on human rights through education, training, dissemination of information and awareness-raising.
For UNESCO, human rights education is a powerful tool for building inclusive societies respectful of human dignity. A real knowledge of human rights by the largest possible number of women and men is essential to make human rights a reality in every community and in the society at large.
Dissemination of knowledge on human rights is carried out through a series of concrete activities, in particular:
- Encouragement of the promotion of human rights through education, training, research and information by awarding the UNESCO/Bilbao Prize for the Promotion of a Culture of Human Rights
- Promotion of education for human rights, peace, democracy, tolerance and international understanding through UNESCO Chairs
- Dissemination of knowledge on major international human rights instruments
- Publication and dissemination of books, manuals and other information materials on challenges, threats and obstacles to the full enjoyment of human rights
- Preparation of human rights training materials
- Implementation of the UNESCO Strategy on Human Rights
- Awareness-raising on human rights issues (Human Rights Day, 10 December)
