The Founding Members
On 8 March 2007, International Women's Day, the Social and Human Sciences Sector organized a meeting at UNESCO's Headquarters. it was co-chaired by the philosopher and philologist Barbara Cassin, and Moufida Goucha, (former) Chief of the Human Security, Democracy and Philosophy Section at UNESCO. Attending were the Founding Members of the Network based in Paris (see below), Permanent Delegates to UNESCO [PDF, 290 KB] and members of the UNESCO Secretariat [PDF in French, 81 KB].
Everything the participants said and the ensuing discussion all led to the same conclusions regarding the opportunity and the soundness of the idea of setting up such a Network.
As Barbara Cassin emphasized, the Network “will be what we make of it”. This website is designed to respond to what was set into motion that day. It aims to use the diversity of its members' careers, and the wide range of special partnerships that UNESCO offers to their best advantage.
“If such a network is established, then I sincerely hope it will not be a simple structure that limits women philosophers to expressing purely identitarian claims. Philosophy is sexless! Which is why any initiative should be encouraged that calls on women philosophers from all countries – working, of course, with their male counterparts – strongly engaged in reflection on the great challenges and issues of concern to humanity, as well as on research and peace-building”.
