Awarded to the Argentinean political scientist and writer Atilio Borón in 2009, the International UNESCO/José Martí Prize for the Unity and Integration of Latin American and Caribbean countries will be awarded for the sixth time on 28 January 2013, at the occasion of the 160th anniversary of birth of José Martí.

In consultation with their National Commissions, all Governments of UNESCO’s Member States are invited to submit nominations to the UNESCO/José Martí Prize 2013.  Non-governmental organizations maintaining official partnership with UNESCO and active in relevant fields covered by the prize are also invited to submit nominations.

The international José Martí Prize of US$ 5.000, provided by the Cuban Government, was established by UNESCO in 1994, at the initiative of Cuba, in order to reward organizations and individuals whose achievements reflect the universal ideals of José Martí, “intellectual author” of the Cuban liberation and fervent advocate for the unity of the countries of Latin America and the Caribbean and universal harmony.

It promotes an activity of outstanding merit, anywhere in the world in favour of unity and integration of Latin American and Caribbean countries, as well as the preservation of their identities, cultural traditions and historical values. Thus it encourages innovative initiatives serving to promote a culture of peace, independence and regional cohesion in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The 2013 laureate will be selected by an International Jury comprising high-lever representatives from Latin America and the Caribbean, North-America, Europe and Africa. Following the recommendation of the Jury, the Director-General of UNESCO will nominate the laureate at the beginning of December 2012.

The award ceremony will be held at La Habana, Cuba, during the “Third International Conference for World Balance” (28 – 30 January, 2013).

Deadline for submissions: 20 November 2012, midnight (GMT +2)
