European Athletics-UNESCO Young Leaders Forum in Spain

Within the framework of their Memorandum of Understanding, UNESCO and European Athletics work together in the organization of the Young Leaders Forum, to be held from 26 to 30 July 2010, in Barcelona, Spain, alongside the European Athletics Championships. The Forum will promote youth civic engagement and athletics to young people.

The event will bring together approximately 100 participants, aged 18 to 26, who are nominated by the European Athletics Member Federations. Discussions will centre on topical and practical presentations and workshops, held both by keynote speakers and participants, towards developing leadership through athletics in community action.

In line with the objectives of the 2010 International Year of Youth: Dialogue and Mutual Understanding, the Forum will promote youth civic engagement and athletics to young people. With the support of UNESCO, the European Athletics Association plans to launch an online community of young leaders tasked to design, develop and implement community projects. These projects encourage youth entrepreneurship and will endow the young leaders with organizational and managerial experience for the future.

The inception and implementation of these community-based athletics projects will contribute to the development, participation and integration of these young people in society. Encouraging the design and implementation of grassroots sport programmes contributes to community building. The online platform will not only enhance communication and community but also support the sharing and exchange of pilot projects.
