Learning values through sport
Celebrating the International Day of Sport for Development and Peace 2016, on 6 April, UNESCO has initiated a campaign promoting the role of sport in delivering values education. A motion design animation, a photo book, and a dedicated webpage have been launched to this effect.
UNESCO is actively engaged in the promotion of sport and physical activity as an entry point for the delivery of values education, both in schools and, more generally, in society. Equality, inclusion, respect, and fairness are core values triggered by sport – and the short motion design animation makes the case for using sport in order to empower learners to be self-determined, responsible, and contribute to society.
The Power of Sport Values photo book is a bilingual (English-French) collection of the best 15 entries of UNESCO’s photo contest on the power of sport values, selected from over 300 photos submitted by photographers from 76 countries all around the world.
Be it in South Sudan, Kazakhstan, Mexico, Bangladesh or Cuba, sport provides joy, helps inclusion, strengthens social mobilization. We invite you to join the campaign and get inspired by these heartwarming photos and stories!
Our society is facing malnutrition, conflict, inactivity, unemployment – sport can act as springboard for social transformation, as a gateway to rounded development, and as a facilitator for inclusive and responsible citizenship. As UNESCO’s Director-General Irina Bokova puts it, “Sport is a field of dreams and a force for fabulous positive change – we must do everything to harness this power”. Not only is sport a bridge between individuals and nations, it can also be an active tool for overcoming stereotypes, rising above exclusion, and fostering citizenship.

UNESCO is a member of an Education Partnership aiming to embed sports values across school-based curricula. The Partnership includes the International Council of Sport Science and Physical Education (ICSSPE), the International Fair Play Committee (IFPC), the International Olympic Committee (IOC), the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
