UNESCO Project on the International Migrants' Rights Convention

Short Description: In order to get a clear view on the possibilities for broad implementation of the Convention, UNESCO undertakes a series of country studies on the obstacles to the ratification of the Convention and on the political and social impacts of ratification.

UNESCO-IOM Migration Museums Initiative
Established in: 2006
Short Description: While coping with the influx of immigrants and the issue of integration of immigrant populations are topics frequently hitting the headlines, UNESCO and the IOM have decided to work together to promote exchange of information and experiences on the history of immigration and the memories of migrants, notably through helping to set up and develop museums in receiving countries.

Regional Migration Agreements
Established in: 2008
Short description: Following the publication of the book Migration without Borders. Essays on the Free Movement of People in 2007, which explored the scenario of free movement at both the world and regional levels with a focus on the ethical, human rights, economic and social dimensions of such an idea, UNESCO is investigating the establishment of free movement within regional organisations throughout the world, through a partnership with the United Nations University (UNU).

Migration and Climate Change
Established in: 2009.
Short description: Climate change is one of the major concerns for the international community and, among its consequences, its impact on migration is the object of increasing attention from both policy-makers and researchers. This project will provide a comprehensive overview of the climate change – migration nexus, through the publication of case studies and of a book.

Skilled Migration and Brain Drain
Established in: 2009
Short description: Skilled migration is a major trend among current migration patterns. It is a major source of concern for many less developed countries, which fear the negative consequences of the loss of skilled nationals in terms of economic and human development. This project will innovatively think about the way in which people’s aspiration toward mobility and migration can be reconciled with states’ right to development.
